Instructional Materials in Writing

Below are the CLN "Theme Pages" which support the study of Writing. CLN's theme pages are collections of useful Internet educational resources within a narrow curricular topic and contain links to two types of information. Students and teachers will find curricular resources (information, content...) to help them learn about this topic. In addition, there are links to instructional materials (lesson plans) which will help teachers provide instruction in this theme.

Communication through Writing

Going to the Movies to Learn How to Write
Advice on how to use students' enthusiasm for movies to introduce them to writing and dramatic story-telling techniques. The article explains how screenplays can be used to demonstrate how to introduce characters and how to use fiction and literary techniques to create dramatic tension between them. Included in the article are links to web sources of screen plays.

Ideas for Teaching Writing

Integrated Resource Packages (IRPs)
These Integrated Resource Packages (IRPs) provide some of the basic information that teachers will require to implement the BC Ministry of Education language arts curricula in K-12.

Journal Writing Every Day
Education World offers a number of articles where teachers describe how they have used Journal Writing and the benefits they have experienced from them. In addition, there are "writing prompts" - suggestions for writing topics - both in the main article as well as in a discussion forum.

Lesson Plans for Technology
This site has a database of over 200 technology-based lesson plans developed by Florida educators. Known as T'NT (Technology 'Nformation for Teachers), the lessons allow subject area teachers to incorporate technology within various subjects including language arts. Use their search engine (keyword = writing) to find a wide variety of writing lesson plans.

Meemaw's Creative Writing Corner
Ideas for elementary teachers to use within their creative writing classes. Topics include: Poetry Patterns, Journal Topics, Warm-up Activities, Word Play Fun, Literature & Poetry Springboards, and Short Subjects.

Outta Ray's Head: Writing Lessons
Ray Saitz, an Ontario teacher, has over 30 handouts, lesson plans, and student activities for writing.

Resources for Teachers
Purdue University's OWL (On-line Writing Lab) has over 120 documents on writing that can be used as student handouts. They also have a collections of links to other online writing resources for teachers and lesson plans for secondary teachers (under construction when the site was reviewed).

Suggestions for how a teacher could use a round-robin activity and cooperative writing groups to encourage students to write mystery stories.

Teacher's Net Lesson Bank
From this link to Teacher's Net home page, you can use their search engine (enter "writing") to find over 80 lesson plans. Alternatively you can browse through their "Reading/Writing" section. Caution: there are many different contributors to this site and lesson plan quality will vary considerably.

Teaching Ideas: Practical Teaching Ideas on Writing
These National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) articles provide ideas and suggestions for teaching writing. Over 60 are provided but their lack of annotation may delay your finding useful items. Lesson Ideas: Writing

Writing in Stereo
A series of lesson plans for teaching whole language to high school students through writing for radio. Included are lesson plans on radio dramatics, short stories, novels, modern drama, poetry, Shakespeare, and essays. The ideas should be generalizable to classes without access to radio production.

Intended to help teachers unify and clarify their knowledge of the writing process, this site has an overview of the writing process, descriptions of the modes and forms of writing, and sample scoring guides. Articles can be downloaded in ClarisWorks or Word format.
