Curricular Resources in History

Below are the CLN "Theme Pages" which focus on specific topics within History. CLN's theme pages are collections of useful Internet educational resources within a narrow curricular topic and contain links to two types of information. Students and teachers will find curricular resources (information, content...) to help them learn about this topic. In addition, there are links to instructional materials (lesson plans) which will help teachers provide instruction in this theme.

American and British History Resources on the Internet
A very extensive meta-list of links.

"ERIC" stands for the "Educational Resources Information Center" - a U.S. federally funded national information system that provides a variety of services and products. "AskERIC", the Internet-based equivalent, contains two major components which may be of interest to Social Studies teachers: (1) the AskERIC Q&A service enables teachers to send a message requesting educational information. The Center staff will search the ERIC databases and respond within 48 hours. (2) The AskERIC Virtual Library contains hundreds of lesson plans, access to the ERIC database and ERIC Digests, topical guides to Internet resources, and archives of education-related listservs.

Biographical Dictionary
A biographical dictionary with information on over 18,000 people from ancient times to the present day.

Canadian Studies: History of Canada

This site is a meta-list of links to information on costume (fashion, clothing, attire, etc.) organized by historical era.

EuroDocs: Primary Historical Documents from Western Europe
This site contains a meta-list of links to Western European (mainly primary) historical documents that are transcribed, reproduced in facsimile, or translated. Organized by country, these documents can shed light on key historical happenings within the respective countries.

Gateway to World History
This site contains World History Archives (documents of world history), an organized tree of links for history, links to Internet resources for the struggle for social progress and information on internet discussion lists for world history. For example, there is a repository for documents that support an understanding of world history and the struggle for social progress, organized by geographical region.

[The] History Net
The History Net web site, a joint effort of the History Group of Cowles Enthusiast Media and the National Historical Society, contains more than 350 articles from past issues of 14 history-related magazines. The site is organized into 10 different subject (World History; American History; Eyewitness Accounts; Personality Profiles; Great Battles of the Ages; Arms, Armies and Intrigue; Interviews; Historic Travel; Aviation and Technology; Homes, Heritage and Antiques). A full index is available as are a search engine and a map.

Internet Archives of Texts and Documents
Links to a wide range of historical documents, manuscripts are text are available at this site, organized under seven categories: The United States, The Americas, Africa, Europe, Middle East, India and South East Asia, and East Asia.

New York State Regents Examinations
The N.Y. State Regents Examinations are a set of subject-based standardized tests for N.Y. high school students. Here are two resources, from different organizations, that can help teachers and students prepare for these or other similar standardized exams.
  • New York State Education Department Download PDF formatted copies of recent Regents Examinations and answer keys from this page.
  • Regents Exams Prep Centre: History The Prep Centre, developed by Oswego County high school teachers, is intended to help Grade 12 teachers and students prepare for the N.Y. Regents Exams. Teachers can access sets of sample questions that are organized by subject and then by topic. Alternatively, students can attempt the questions, view the correct answer, or follow a link to a tutorial on the curricular content in the question if they need assistance.

[The] Passing of a Century
This ThinkQuest site offers a comprehensive resource for students on the major events and trends of the 20th Century. Articles may include facts as well as interpretations, and opportunities for students to interact with others.
