EUDORA MAIL

  1. Open Eudora. The first order of business is to establish where you would like to place attachments. Eudora will present you with a default folder/directory. You may choose to accept it or to designate a different folder name/directory.

  2. Enter settings. From the Special Menu, choose Settings. You will see a screen similar to the following:

Enter the following information into the appropriate sections.

    Personal Information

POP account: userid@cln.etc.bc.ca (or address given)
      Real Name: your real name
Return address: userid@cln.etc.bc.ca (same as above)

    Hosts

      POP Account: same as above
      SMTP: pop.etc.bc.ca

    Sending Mail

All other selections except the KLudge for broken 53000....

    Attachments

Attachment Folder: select a name and a directory

  3. Signature File. Create an automatic signature file. From the Window Menu, choose Signature. Be selective about the information you include about yourself. DON'T include your home information. Try to keep it to 4 lines or less. When you close the signature window, you will be prompted to save the file. Do so.

  4. Check Mail. To check your mail, go to the File Menu and choose Check Mail. Your mail will be downloaded to your Inbox.

  5. Reply to Mail. Highlight a message in the Inbox. From the Message Menu, choose Reply. A new message window will open. The To: field will be filled and the subject heading will insert "Re:" prior to the subject of the original message. The original message will appear in the text field. It will be highlighted and each line will be preceded by ">", indicating that it is a quotation from the original message. You may delete the entire original message or insert your reply wherever you wish.

  6. Send a New Message. From the File Menu, choose New Message. A new message window will appear. Enter information into the header. You must enter an address but the rest of the header can be blank. Enter an appropriate Subject. The tab key will advance you through the header and into the text field.

  7. Forwarding a Message. To forward a message, highlight it in the Inbox. From the Message Menu, choose Forward. A new window will appear with all but the To: field entered. Enter the address of the person to whom you wish to forward the mail. To test this function, you can forward it to yourself. The message will have arrows preceding each line.

  8. Redirect and Send Again. Redirecting a message will send the message to another person and the From field will contain the address of the original sender. Your address will be appended to that address and be preceded by the phrase "by way of...". Using the Send Again option will send the message back to you. This function is most useful if you wish to send an outgoing message again.

  9. Copies. The Cc and Bcc fields allow you to copy someone on a message. If you enter an address or addresses in the Cc field, everyone who receives the message will see to whom the original was sent and who received copies. The Bcc (blind copy) field allows you to copy someone without the main recipient knowing that copies have been sent. The main recipient sees nothing in the Cc or Bcc fields. The person who receives the copy does not see their name or address but only the name/address of the main recipient. Send a message to someone. Blind copy yourself.

  10. Attachments. If you know that the recipient uses Eudora and the same application software as you, you can send fully formatted documents as Attachments. Create a new message and enter the address information. Then, from the Message Menu, choose Attach Document. You will be presented with a dialogue box through which you must tell Eudora where to find the document. The directory path of the document will appear in the header. The text field is available for you to write a message.

The recipient will see the following message:

Send a message to someone else. Attach a document.

  11. Mailboxes. You can organize your work into mailboxes into which you can transfer messages from your Inbox. There are several ways to do this. We'll do it the easiest way. Highlight a message in your Inbox. From the Transfer Menu, choose New. Enter a name for the new mailbox. If you decide not to transfer the message but to just create the new mailbox, select the "do not transfer" option. Now, Select the Mailbox Menu and you will see the new mailbox. The see the contents of the mailbox, select it. Create several mailboxes with names such as "Personal", "Pro-D", etc.

  12. Sorting Mailboxes. Any mailbox can be sorted by any one of several criteria. This is a handy feature when searching for a particular message. You can choose from status, priority, date, sender or subject. Status refers to whether it has been sent, replied to or queued. Open your Inbox. From the Edit Menu, choose Sort and sort the Inbox several ways.

  13. Nicknames. You can enter nicknames for people to whom you frequently send messages. This allows you to enter the short nickname instead of their entire email address. From the Window Menu, choose Nicknames. Select New and then enter the appropriate information as and when prompted. If you choose the "recipients" list option, you will be able to access the nickname from the Message Menu when using the Forward/Redirect options. There is no need to include the domain name (eg. @cln.etc.bc.ca) if the person is on the same network as you - in this case, the CLN. If, however, the domain name is different from yours, you must enter their entire address. Set up some nicknames for your most frequent corespondents.

  14. Distribution Lists. Once you have set up nicknames for individuals, you can set up a nickname for a group of individuals. For instance, if you have nicknames for Fred, Susan, Louise and Betty, you can make a nickname such as "pals" and enter the nicknames (not the email addresses) for Fred, Susan, Louise and Betty. Make a nickname for a group of individuals for whom you have created individual nicknames.

  15. Finding a message. Eudora will perform a search of all messages. From the Edit Menu, choose Find. Enter the appropriate search criteria such as whether or not to match upper and lowercase letters. The search will start with the current, active mailbox and will procede to successive mailboxes.

  16. Advanced features. Eudora Pro allows spellchecking and filtering. Filtering allows you to set up filters, based on criteria, which will automatically sort both incoming and outgoing messages into appropriate mailboxes.
